Hey everybody, what’s up? This is my first marketing minute, and I am so excited that you’re joining me here today, and what I want to talk to you about is this Instagram change to their stories. I noticed it again today on my Instagram, and I thought I have got to bring this to you guys, you’ve got to jump on this right now.
What’s happening is when I go to my little search icon, which if you’re on your home page of your Instagram in the bottom, kind of towards the left, is a little magnifying glass, and if you click on that, at the top of that search page is suggested stories that Instagram thinks you might want to see. Clear on the left is what’s live right now, so the Instagram, the top live accounts.
But next to that is a little story, or a circle and it has my hometown under it, with a little like pushpin, like a Google map pushpin, you know? And it’s like Zillah, that’s my hometown, and so if I click on that and open it, I see two stories, one is somebody I don’t know, the next one is somebody I don’t know, but both of them are showing up at the top of my search page clear toward … it’s like Instagram says,
“Martin, I know you would be very interested in this because they are located in your hometown.”
So what does that mean for you? Well, let’s say that you have … let’s say that you are working in one town, or like a suburb of a big city. Like maybe you’re in Phoenix, but you don’t want to reach Phoenix, you want to reach a certain sub town, or sub city of that big metropolis, right? So what you do then, is create a story that introduces yourself, like, “Hi, I’m Martin. I’m a professional remodeler. I specialize in kitchens and bathrooms, and I work in Scottsdale, Arizona”, or something like that. “If you want to see some of my work, please visit my Instagram page today, I’ll be happy to meet with you.” And then drop the tag of that city right there on that story.
The way to do that is when you’re doing a story, up in the right hand side at the top, is a little smiley face. You click on that, and it gives you a list of options, right? So just click on the option that says location. And that will pull up locations closest to you and what Instagram thinks you might want to tag. Select that town that you want to target, or the name of the business you want to target, or whatever. But I would suggest the town that you’re wanting to target. Drop that tag on that story, okay? Now Instagram knows that this story is associated with that town.
When someone is in that town, if they’re located in that area, Instagram is going to say, hey you guys might want to see this story, it’s right there in your hometown. Your story will show up there, in the upper left feed of their search, and as they’re looking at, just curious, like who is located around me, here comes you, and you say, “Hi, I’m so and so, I specialize in decks. Or kitchens. If you want to see more of the quality of work that I do, come visit my Instagram feed.” And it pulls them back to your account, where they can follow you, get to know you, like you, and trust you, and eventually, (drum roll please)… do business with you.
Here’s what I think is going on.
I think Instagram is moving towards advertising where they’re going to ask you to pay some money to be up at the top of someone’s feed, up at the top of someone’s search bar for those location tags. But right now, it’s free, it’s organic, it’s easy. It’s so easy for you to get in front of more people. Do it. Please do it today. Don’t wait till tomorrow or next week. Take advantage of this opportunity and do it today. Start dropping tags on your stories so that Instagram will put you in front of your ideal customers.
